Most of all, what I want to say is thank you! Thank you from the bottom of my heart, to everyone who bought anything from a decal to a limited-edition piece, and thank you to anyone who has taken the time to say how much they enjoy my art – it means the world to me.

Some people have mentioned that this has something of a “Last Supper” feel to it – that wasn’t my intention at the time, but I can kind of see it now, especially with the marlin having his fins out like he does. It’s funny how artwork can be influenced subliminally.

My rule at the start was that I would never say no to a job. I took every opportunity that came my way; Airbrushing surfboards, designing t-shirts, building websites, flash animation, photoshop. The hard work I had put into learning all of these skills was definitely paying off. I was working for anybody and everybody. I was always working on everybody else’s ideas but I had a lot of ideas of my own that I wanted to get out there. I started wondering what it would take to make a living creating my own artwork.

The great white shark is drinking a Bloody Mary because of course he is – what else is he going to be drinking? He’s got the works in there; the shrimp cocktail and the celery. The octopus is putting an arm around the shark’s drink. He’s also got a tentacle going towards the crab’s shot as well as going for the bottle of Tito’s and the sailfish’s dirty martini. I took so much time to draw a really intricate design on the board and then found out the hard way that the cutting took about 20 times longer than the drawing...

Before my class one week, I was at the beach staring out at the sea, thinking about what to do – I knew I wasn’t in a position to be able to go to art school like some of my friends had done, but I was just praying and contemplating life, when I saw a dolphin jump up out of the ocean. I’ve always loved dolphins and had an affinity for them. It felt like a really significant moment for me. I went to my art class and as I was walking into the classroom, my teacher, Glenda Taylor, mentioned to me a local surf shop was looking for artists to design their surfboards. I told her I’d have to miss that week’s class.

Ahoy, humans! Old Salty here, giving you an update from Diossy Towers. My buddies at the Raw Bar have been telling me they’ve all been using the net lately (which makes a change from getting caught in one) so I thought I’d put the beer down, get my fish fingers tapping at this here keyboard and tell you the latest goings on – fresher than today’s sushi.
