The Story Behind “Board Meeting”

The original idea of “Board Meeting” as a pun came up with my friends - specifically my friend Scotty. Every time he and I went surfing, our code was that we had to have a board meeting. These are the types of board meetings that I enjoy the most - actually getting out there and either surfing or paddleboarding. The idea for the art came about after a conversation with one of the head buyers at Ron Jon - We started to discuss a way to collaborate on a piece and I initially came up with the idea of having the characters at a bar type situation, but I realized that instead of a bar it’d be more fun if they were all hanging out on a board. I’ve always said I can’t drink and surf – it has to be one or the other so that’s why there’s no booze in this piece.

I felt like these characters are all fighting for position on the board, but if you follow the leash, you’ll see that it is connected to the mahi; In my mind, this is his board. The Mad Mahi is always angry about something so in this scenario, he’s mad that all his friends are trying to take over his board. Some other fun characters in this piece - the crab is trying to cut the leash; and the pelican and the seagull are arguing over the catfish. On the right, the octopus is teasing the heron with a shrimp, the shrimp has a little man complex so he’s like, "bring it on!" My buddy Scotty is represented in the flying fish down below and he has a little halo. He’s coming in and just laughing at the angry characters above him.

I love when other people interpret my artwork in different ways. One of the funniest interpretations of this one was from a collector who thought that the fish on the board were all afraid of the clownfish in the bottom left. I used to be afraid of clowns as a kid so maybe subconsciously he was right!

This is the type of board meeting I enjoy the most - I hope you guys enjoy it too!
