The meaning of "True Colors".
If you've ever heard me tell the story of this artwork you know I always mention art is up to interpretation and this is just my interpretation of it. Yours may be different and that's OK as the way artwork speaks to us is unique to each individual. This piece is quite different from the others... It is more surrealistic.
The easiest way I can describe it is it represents the transformations we all go through in the face of adversity.
The adversity is symbolized by the exploding light. The bird changing from white represents how adversity tends to strike when things are good and pure as the white bird. The light and the dark of the image represents the duality of life. And how when we are processing a difficult event in our lives we may for a time be stuck in a dark place. The darkness represents the difficulty and the mind. The purple swirling in the darkness represents the swirling and repetitive thoughts and emotions that keep us stuck within our mind while we process the event. The beautiful seascape represents hope and the new life that is waiting for us on the other side of pain. That hope is always there ready for us once we emerge from our greif and once we are better able to process the adversity.
The reason the bird is transforming into a colorful Macaw is because I feel, once we have gone through something so difficult, our lives become more colorful in the sense that we don't take anything for granted.. we don't take our loved ones for granted.. we don't take time for granted.. we strive to make the most out of life and we don't sweat the small stuff any more. A couple of other things you will see in the artwork is the two birds flying away. This represents loss... Of not being part of the same flock any longer. The palm tree blowing in the breeze represents the winds of change. And the uneven and off center positioning of the window represents life not being perfect.
This is the piece I look at every morning when I wake up. To me it is a reminder of what I've gone through and where I am going. It is a reminder to enjoy this moment as there is no other. It represents hope and even though there may be more adversity in the future I will enjoy life to the fullest every single day possible.
Another thing I try to explain is most of my art comes in a vision... Sometimes the vision is clear and other times it is like driving through fog and the picture slowly becomes clearer as I move forward. This image was one that started as a basic idea and developed more and more as I worked on it. Once the artwork is completed I don't always have the ability to explain it right away. Rather it takes me a while of talking about it with others and thinking about it over time to help me verbalize what it means to me. Again, this is my interpretation of it.
We all have our own unique stories of adversity and If this piece speaks to you, I hope it gives you a sense of peace and understanding.
